"Accomplishments"

Welcome to NAMI Illinois' discussion groups, "Communicate." Here's your opportunity to learn what others are talking about and to share your opinion and ask questions.

Good communications is the heart of any relationship and this includes your relationship with NAMI (National, State and local Affiliates).  NAMI Illinois is starting a new service for its members and local chapters called "Communicate."  Its purpose is to share helpful information. In order to do this you can ask questions for problems you have or you can share information that has been helpful to you and/or your organization.

"Accomplishments"

Posting accomplishments and sharing National, State and Local successes will give all of us pride in our organization and inspire us to achieve or exceed the results of others.

Postings will be listed below.

KUDOS to NAMI DuPage! - Posted 9-14-2007

A Social Worker from a DuPage County Hospital just called on behalf of a LaSalle County resident who will be discharged and wanted to make sure he was able to connect with NAMI in his area.  Coincidentally, this patient already called on his own earlier this week but I think it is great Social Services calls too and thanked them for following up.

Can you imagine how much better patients would be if every social service worker connected their patients to their respective NAMI organizations, or at least made an attempt to do so?

As soon as I get done writing this email, I am going to contact my local hospital and make sure our social workers do the same thing.

Maybe we could have a contest with our Illinois affiliates and see how many social workers are connecting their inpatients/outpatients to NAMI?  I have been tracking my referrals on a carbonless telephone message pad.

Thank you!

Great job on getting quoted in the September/October 2007 issue of "The Illinois School Board Journal" to Pat Doyle, educational program director for NAMI-DuPage!

A Precedent Has Been Made - Posted 9-7-2007

I  wanted to give you all news of a very exciting legal ruling made in St. Clair County, Illinois. My son, David, suffers with Bipolar Disorder and has been in and out of jail since October 2004. He was released again on August 28th. But not without treatment! Two weeks prior to his release the court held a bond hearing. Here's the awesome part. The judge ordered the Alton Mental Health Facility to evaluate David and design a program of treatment for him before he was released, which they did! The mental health representative said this is the first time ever that they have been ordered by the court to do this! My prayers were answered. Not only did the judge order the program of treatment but ordered the Comprehensive Mental Health facility to give David the medication he needs, to schedule his doctor appointments and enter him in group therapy programs. The mental health professionals are also helping him receive assistance and file for social security disability. First thing on the 29th after being released, he went to the doctor and was given free Depakote ER to last until his next appointment on Sept. 27th. I cannot express in words how grateful I am. David's lawyer pushed for these conditions and the court agreed. The lawyer is representing David as a public defender. I pray that this action by this judge helps others suffering in jail.

A NAMI guest and mother of a 19-year old behaviorally ill son has been challenged with our healthcare system for the care of her son; e.g., E.R. personnel won't help her find appropriate referral sources, local psychiatrists refuse to care for her son (he is non-compliant) and give her another referral, etc. until she advised them she was going to contact her local NAMI, did they get on the phone and start calling facilities to place her son.

NAMI Vermilion County - Posted March 15, 2007

On Thursday, March 1, 2007, one of NAMI-Vermilion County's members, Mr. Brian James, was invited to appear on a teleconference sponsored by the local VA Hospital in Danville, Illinois.  He was asked to speak about NAMI, the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) as well as the support groups which are held in Vermilion County.  The audience consisted of pracitioners in psychiatry at the VA but included other members of the staff.  I was informed that Brian did a great job with his presentation.  I am extremely gratified to know this as being invited to participate in a VA sponsored teleconference for our affiliate is quite an honor and it has never been offered before.  Thanks Brian for a job well done!
